Heres one for the oldies among us. Anyone who owned an 8-bit machine back in the eighties (c64, amstrad, speccy, oric, atari, etc) has most likely played a text adventure. With its origins starting back in the 70s with Advent on the PDP-10, you might think the genre is long dead, but in fact its getting stronger. Anyhow, wheres the Quake connection? One of the developers on Elder Scrolls 4 : Oblivion ( Jason Bergman ) has written a Quake "interactive fiction" game:

No mention of qwack at all, but this is still good for the future of ahem, "cyber athletes". Athletes! BwAHAAHA ROFFLECOPTER! Someone pass me another pie:

quote :
In a press release, WCG said that Microsoft has signed on to sponsor not only this falls worldwide competition in Italy, but also national championships in South Korea and the US, as well as three "pan-regional" championships. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but in addition to whatever financial considerations exist, Microsoft will be supplying all the hardware for the 2006 through 2008 competitions. Thats right, all the games will be contested on Windows PCs (no surprise there) and the Xbox 360.

Microsoft will provide games, consoles, Xbox Live online game service, and peripheral equipment for all WCG events. Microsoft will also supply players with state-of-the-art consoles at WCG events.

At the 2005 World Cyber Games, competition covered 6 PC titles (Counter-Strike: Source, FIFA Soccer 2005, Need for Speed: Underground 2, StarCraft: Brood War, WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne, and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War) and 2 console games (Dead or Alive Ultimate and Halo 2).

  DeltaCTF for Quake 4 - 06/04/2006[spectator] | 91476 views | 3 replies
Spotted on ESR first, this looks good! The devteam seems very strong and I believe that what Quake 4 needs at the moment is to be fun, not balanced as the entire community seem to be struggling with what they call gameplay improvements which wont lead anywhere different to what Quake 3 was.

So thumbs up to the Delta team!

  Crysis: Next-gen stuff - 26/03/2006[spectator] | 90604 views | 1 replies
Earth, 2019: A colossal asteroid crashes down to Earth. The North Korean Government quickly seals off the island chain, claiming the mysteries of the asteroid for themselves. The United States responds by dispatching an elite team of Delta Force Operators to recon the situation and report back to the Pentagon. Amid rising tensions between the US and North Koreans, the asteroid suddenly bursts open, revealing a massive, 2km high alien ship. The ship generates an immense force sphere, freezing a vast portion of the island and drastically altering the global weather system. The invasion of Earth has begun.

Stunning video:

  GameCon Review - 27/02/2006Illkillya | 78340 views | 11 replies
Dardoz posted a bit of a review of GameCon on the Unreal.ie site:
http://www.unreal.ie/forum/&c=showthread&ThreadID=1792&page=1. The Quake4 tourney turned out to be a small one, but with what is most likely the top 3 Irish Q4 players in action: melachi, Vinnit, and kroNic. The match up that I was looking forward to (Vin vs kroNic) never happened, as melachi claimed the glory by beating both Vinnit and kroNic. I dont have all the results on me, but other games included a win for Searrard over Dardoz, and a win for melachi over Searrard.

In the ut2k4 tourney, kroNic won a very close game vs Chosen, before defeating Dardoz in the final (who previously dispatched Moomz and Vinnit in very close games in the previous round). Some questions over the quality of the organisation, but it sounded like a worthwhile LAN nonetheless.

  Q4 Nations Cup - Group Stages Ov - 19/02/2006Illkillya | 78075 views | 6 replies
No joy for Ireland in the end, as we faced off against Estonia tonight. On the first map we were missing Overlord, Searrard, and Dest, so I had to play on my ISDN (on a German server). It was their map, Sandstorm, which they won 167-128 The Irish team was Vinnit, sno, windowlicker, killy, while Estonia had scient, mth, vrz, and megro. As you would expect in a Quake 4 match, the server crashed after the first map, and we spent an hour trying to find a new one. By the time we had found a new server, Dest was back, and despite not having played Quake 4 for several months, I knew he would do better than I could on my ISDN. And it turned out to be a very close game indeed, with Estonia taking the victory by 2 frags in the end, 87-85.

So that concludes Irelands involvement in this season of the Nations Cup. Disappointing that a small and semi-active community has now deteriorated into a very small and inactive community. Well done to the core players who stuck with it and made the commitment for the sake of the team - it says a lot when a country with 6 or 7 players has no problem fielding a team while a country like the Netherlands with 100 players struggle to get 4. Although the Nations Cup has lost nearly all value in recent years, due in part to the frequency of the event, it is good to have representation there. Consider that the upcoming ESWC has 50 countries represented, including the likes of Mongolia and Martinique, and Ireland is not one of those countries.

  Q4World beta 3.0a - 28/01/2006[spectator] | 78837 views | 0 replies
Looks very nice with many bug fixes and very interesting new features like a new gametype: OOnage!

Its a gameType based on Team DM with some modified rules :
- if a player takes a powerup between quad, regeneration, invisibility, all his teammates will have it too ! Beware you drop the PU once killed, and the opponent can then take back the PU...
- As q4ws team is very concern by peace between friends, all teamdamage are doubled Smile
- projectiles seem weird in this mode, dont you think ? They can bounce twice on floor and walls !
Characteristics :
- no self damage.
- team damage x2.
- crazy projectiles (rox, nails, & plasma).

Be Careful !!! You want to play OOnage Mode ? You must vote it with the vote menu or callvote command (callvote gameType OOnage). This mode doesnt appear in Server creation menu

  Netherlands vs Ireland - 27/01/2006Illkillya | 74500 views | 1 replies
Match report is now up on Clanbase. Netherlands were missing one player so they drafted in s1ntex. A good performance from them nonetheless, with SICK in particular playing very well, they won comfortably on both maps. Irelands team was Vinnit, sno, Searrard, and Overlord, with windowlicker subbing while SICK, MadDog, TamilNeo, and sTx showed for the Netherlands.

NED chose sandstorm, and they worked the spawns very well while they were in control to rack up a lot of frags in a short space of time. Better than Nothing was a better game with great work by Vincent holding RA for much of the first half, and there was about 18 frags between the teams for most of it, but SICKs fragging power made the difference. Netherlands got a foothold after about 13mins and it was easy for them after that.

Final scores:
Sandstorm: NED 211 - 133 IRE
Better than Nothing: NED 173 - 102 IRE

Thanks to 4k for the loan of the server, report is up at:

Next week is a break for Ireland, with our game vs Spain the week after, followed by Estonia.

  QoS packet shaping software - 22/01/2006x0n | 68270 views | 3 replies
Packet wha ? this shit is soo good, it has to go on the homepage: http://www.cfos.de/

So what is it? without getting technical, let me just tell you Ive got bittorrent running at full speed without any upload/download throttling and Im playing quake at the same time, with NO LAG. I had a max speed download going on, then I fired up IE to hit a web page, and shit comes down immediately.

No, it doesnt give you more bandwidth. It uses XPs built in QoS (quality of service) layer in the stack to give different priorities to different types of traffic. I can use skype/gtalk/msn/irc/quake/etc at the same time as doing massive downloads and it will automagically prioritize the traffic, keeping voip traffic unlagged. It comes preconfigured with a list of all the major apps pre-selected at the right priority. You get 30 days to try it out before you can buy it.. but its only 9 euro. Get it, bitches. No, I dont work for them

  Ireland defeated by Belgium - 20/01/2006Illkillya | 43422 views | 5 replies
Our first game in the CB Nations Cup was against a strong team from Belgium. Our line up consisted of sno, dest, Searrard, and Vinnit (with windowlicker and overlord for backup) while Belgiums side consisted of Kingpin, impulse, Blackend, and Shot. Belgium were very comfortable taking the win on Sandstorm, but things were closer on Better than Nothing where the sides close for the first half of the map, before Belgium gained control and took it easily from there.
