In order to get Quakeworld up and running firstly get the modern Quake Client Package. It contains a newly developed QW Client (EzQuake) with all required crosshairs, conchars, configs in a nice package.

http://www.nquake.com/

Once you have the package installed you will need to configure the beast. Now this can/might take a while as QW is highly customizable. There are many sample configs about the place. The EzQuake client comes with documentation so you can see what you can/want to configure. Then if you have further questions or need help you should go to the following advanced configuration forum:

http://quakeworld.nu/forum/viewforum.php?id=10

Okay so you have the client and its all nicely configured. Where are the servers?
Well the Irish servers are as follows:

altFIRE QuakeWorld CTF Server - 193.1.40.166:27975
altFIRE QuakeWorld Server - 193.1.40.166:27500

Also you can view all worldwide qw servers/players on an easy to use website as follows:

www.quakeservers.net

Also to arrange games or find out whats going on you should get on irc.
Firstly download an IRC client such as mirc
http://www.mirc.com/

Start it up and connect to the main IRC network for Quakeworld players
http://www.quakenet.org

Once you are connected then join the irish chat channels by typing:
/join #qw.ie
/join #nafianna

or click here
http://irc.netsplit.de/webchat/?net=QuakeNet&room=%23tayto

And now you are all set to go.

ive donated to quake.ie!

There are some old quake.ie tutorials on this site done by Bunny/Zero/etc from a few years ago that are still very relevant. Worth digging them up if you can find them.

No matter what OS youre running, http://nquake.com is still the only link you need. The ezquake client is constantly updated and the nquake package textures and config defaults are maintained as sensible no matter what new features are added to the client, and the nquake front page even has a link to a web irc client that connects you to the #qwrookie channel on quakenet.

Also, that "modern guide" points you towards the utterly unusable, outdated altfire servers which give you the option of a thoroughly broken free-for-all server with bunny hopping severely crippled and huge map-cycle problems, and a similarly plagued capture-the-flag server on which you cant really change maps. QW has a rich competitive scene, and none of it revolves around ctf or ffa.

Servers have come a long way since 1996s qwsv.exe. I would direct anyone who wants to set up a server to http://qw-dev.net/projects/ktx
